On the right track in Ireland

1 February 2025

In an era where sustainability and public transport have become global priorities, Ireland is trying to transform its railway system. As passengers and local communities call for improvements to make travel faster and more friendly to the environment, the Irish Department of Transport has decided to plan an extensive modernisation of the rail network. The project will upgrade tracks and other equipment to meet new demands and also meet Ireland’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and making public transport more accessible.

The Department of Transport published an All-Island Strategic Rail Review outlining the projects and changes to be made over the next 25 years. It also proposed to develop a comprehensive investment plan for the next ten years and beyond.

To help make the plan possible and assist with funding, Ireland asked EIB Advisory to enlist a team of international experts in sustainable transport. This advisory project financed by the InvestEU Advisory Hub enabled the Department of Transport to take advantage of the European Investment Bank’s extensive experience in sustainable projects, access a diverse pool of global expertise and organise financial and technical support. This project helps the transport plans meet high standards of sustainability and innovation.

The EIB Advisory and Irish transport officials identified several priority projects that are important for the future of Irish railways. These include improving key routes, adding new rail connections in the busiest areas and electrifying the busiest routes. Each project will be analysed to ensure it meets passenger demand, has a realistic budget and can be completed within ambitious timelines. Experts are also exploring innovative financing methods, considering that both the public and private sectors may be involved.

A long-term plan for the Irish railways has been created, covering everything from modernising tracks and stations to introducing new lines and connections, with a focus on making the network more eco-friendly. This plan, including the 2025 to 2035 period, outlines when and how each priority will be implemented.

This initiative goes beyond improving trains. It helps Ireland’s growth and development, giving future generations a sustainable and well-connected transport system.
