In Athens, the EIB funds an urban multi-sector investment programme and provides technical assistance to implement the 2030 City Resilient Strategy, developed in cooperation with 100 RC. The package of technical support leverages resources from URBIS and the Natural Capital Finance Facility (NCFF) to enhance the city’s resilience to climate change impacts and other shocks. The EIB team produced the Climate Change Adaptation Design Principles for Public Buildings and for Public Spaces, which take into consideration vulnerability and climate change risks. These Design Principles will then be used to guide the preparation of the final designs: to refurbish selected schools and other public buildings with the objective to improve their energy efficiency and increase their resilience to climate change and earthquakes (URBIS technical assistance) and to renew and green selected public spaces, to address urban heat island effects, to reduce flush flooding and other climate related impacts as well as to create positive impacts on the city’s biodiversity (NCFF technical assistance).
